History Week has grown from modest beginnings in 2004 to become South Australia’s biggest community festival. Each year hundreds of groups across the state spend thousands of hours planning, researching and presenting events which showcase our shared history.
Those presenting events range from community museums, historical societies, cultural and community groups, cemeteries, gardens, businesses, service organisations and churches to libraries, local government, state government agencies and state collecting institutions. While some work on events as part of professional interest in history, many more contribute to events as volunteers. The ideas and hard work behind the individual events ensure the festival’s success and popularity.
History SA coordinates the overall festival, registering events (405 in 2010) and producing the printed and online programs - programs which reflects the diversity of the state’s history and the passions of the history community.
For 2011, History Week will become About Time: South Australia's History Festival, and will run for the whole month of May. This change reflects the success of the program, and has been made possible by a grant of funds from the SA Government to mark the 175th anniversary of the foundation of the Province of South Australia.
Registrations for About Time 2011 have now closed.
